Sacha Baron Cohen presents one of his funniest characters – The One. The Only – Ali G!
So we have all met those little white boys that want to be black and think ‘they are street man!‘ Ali G is the epitome of a white street kid that just wants to be black and emulates the African American culture. In his series he interviews some of the most famous and influential names in politics, science and the media. Posing an an uneducated ‘yoof’ Ali G asks the most preposterous questions much to the disbelief of his interviewees. He mistakes famous people such as the singer Louis Armstrong for Neil Armstrong the astronaut and also creates ridiculous analogies that compares science and high brow culture to life on ‘da streets’ and ‘puffin da reefa’ much to the bemusement of his interviewees. Whilst ridiculous, Cohen plays the character so well that those he interviewees fail to see through his guise and are duped by his mockery and ironic comedy. If Cohen wasn’t hilarious enough with his pranks and cleverly timed naive statements, even funnier is the reactions he receives. When interviewing certain important figures you can literally see on there faces the look of ‘Why the hell am I being forced to waste my important time with this illiterate imbecile!’. Others are disparaging, sarcastic and condescending, whilst others are simply bemused and do the best to answer his questions with great patience.
This is an interesting insight into some of our world leaders and how they view the general public and youth culture. He also has some very fantastic minds on the show as well as those who have little time for the ‘yoof of today’.
