Woking’s finest export McLaren has always had a foot in Formula 1 from its conception in the 60’s by Formula 1 race driver Bruce McLaren through many decades of producing amazing track cars . In more recent years McLaren is finally getting the recognition they deserve as Sports, Luxury and Supercars. Despite being known in the industry for its innovative design and having built the most successful F1 race car ever, it hasn’t in the past had the same recognition as say Ferrari , Porsche or Aston Martin to the general public.

After a bumpy period about a decade ago McLaren are now going from strength to strength and the new 720S is a sight to behold. From the 570S, through the 675Lt and up to the P1, McLaren has been blowing the collective minds of the motor industry and gearing up for it’s most sensational release yet with it being the first time that the Surrey based tech start up have replaced one of their core cars.

McLaren have always been known for their tenacious, unflagging and forward thinking approach to car manufacture and have always been prepared to veer off into the unknown if necessary. The 720S is the perfect example of the unusual visual and mechanical tangents they are willing to travel in pursuit of the perfect car.

With approximately 90 per cent of this motor being new, from the enlarged 4.0 engine through the intercoolers, turbos, pistons , exhausts and crankshafts. This beauty will accelerate you to 186mph in 21.8 secs if you’re so inclined , and will take you to 62mph in 2.9 , so it’s not the fasted velocity but it still has a good kick. Incorporated in the chassis is a rigid upper structure and windscreen surround and due to the engine being mounted 150mm lower that the 650S it has an enhanced centre of gravity for a more controlled and smooth drive.

It’s not just under the hood that’s all sparkly and new, the funky new double skinned dihedral doors open to an 80 degree angle and theatrically the engine is illuminated and visible through the rear screen.

This accessible and non threatening beauty is low on CO2’s and moves like a Lotus Elise with an almost telepathic connection between the car and the driver and a whole lot of soul. Possessing a balance and stability not always achieved at high speed and the efficient refinement of the truly special.

Of course all this doesn’t come cheap and you could easily pass the £300,000 mark depending on your choice of extras. Somehow combining the ergonomics of a race car, the design expertise of a Supercar and the serene interior a Luxury motor this newest addition to the McLaren family covers all basis and if you can afford the super luxury price tag would be a total dream to own.

The only question now is where will McLaren go from here? Can they improve on perfection?
