Borat is a legendary character from the fictional country of Kazakhstan. Cohen plays a character that is not very well educated in the ways of British etiquette. His grasp of English often leads to very awkward and uncomfortable moments when he pranks the American public and American figures into believing that he is an uneducated foreigner. His pranks are never malicious and always playful, if at times quite graphic.
Due to his contagious smile and his supposed unassuming and naive manner he gets a way with quite a lot. He executes his lines with precision and his delivery is always spot on. Cohen pokes fun at his on film comrades but in an endearing way which sometimes brings the best out in them and sometimes makes us gasp in shock and laugh out loud! Borat makes some very shocking statements that most British people would deem inappropriate and borderline offensive, but with that sweet smile and that slightly ignorant expression he is able to escape judgement as his counterparts take pity on him and try to over explain.
It’s a true test of character to spend time with someone who appears uneducated. Some you can tell are sweet spirited as they take the time to explain his errors gently. Others are arrogant and make themselves look idiotic when they make detrimental comments in a superior way.
In this video Borat is briefed on English etiquette then has dinner with a high class English family. He makes various faux pas and there are some awkward silences, but he is met with at least a little understanding. Later on in the video he doesn’t fair quite as well. Watch it all the way through. This will teach you a lot about people and how they perceive others.
