Stay HOT
The cold weather can be harsh on your joints and result in stiffness and even injury. There’s no need to subject yourself to an arduous six mile sprint through the frost. Warm up near the radiator then hit the treadmill. If you insist on pounding the concrete then make sure you layer up.
Shake It Out
Spend at least 5 minutes on your arms and shoulders when warming up, rolling your shoulders in both directions and shaking your arms. You really need to loosen those joints in the cold to avoid your muscles contracting.
Hat’s The Way To Do It
A wooly hat will prevent you from losing heat through your head and keep you at the perfect temperature.
Take A Break
You’ll gain nothing from working out if you are suffering from a cold or flu. In fact it will take longer for your cold to clear up and will compromise your immune system. Know when to relax with a hot cuppa and a blanket.
Stay Hydrated
When you are layered up, dehydration is a bigger risk. Pack a bottle of isotonic sports drink. The freezing point will be lower due to the sugar content.
Clever Layers
Many thin layers trap heat more effectively than one thick layer. The heat becomes trapped between the fibres of the material.
Think T shirt, fleece and a rainproof, wind proof jacket.
Move To The Beat
Take your favourite playlist with you on your smartphone or Ipod. Musical not only makes you feel warmer inside but a good beat will get your adrenaline going and make for a more successful workout.
