Formula Vintage Preview

Friday night we once again found ourselves at the renowned home of British Motor Racing – Silverstone! By the end of the summer it will be a home from home. With this weekend seeing the start of the motor racing season with the newly christened Formula Vintage event presented by the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC). This 80 year old race for vintage car enthusiasts is held in rounds with Silverstone being the opening round and subsequent ones being held at Oulton Park, Cadwell Park , Mallory Park and Snetterton , respectively.

The weekend will see a smorgasboared of beautifully elegant and powerful vintage motors pitting against each other in races such as the The Silverstone Trophy Race for Special Pre-War Sports-Cars , the Race for Pre-1966 Grand Prix Cars and the coveted GP Italia and Lancaster Trophies Race for Vintage Racing Cars.

This evening a select few “Scribes of the Press” as Nick Upton put it, along with members of the VSCC were invited along to a get together in the Members Only Brookland Suite and were regaled with stories and news from Compere Nick Upton. Amid a sea of tweed and Barbour there was an excited chatter as drivers, VSCC members and press discussed the exciting programme of the next two days.

As Nick says “Racing doesn’t really start until the VSCC starts” so this weekend really is the start of the motor racing calendar for many. Described as ‘The best of pre-war and historic motorsports in the modern era’ it really is going to provide a tantalising weekend of the original supercars, historic splendour and resplendent beauties merging with the modern world.

With a view to keeping with the times the VSCC wants the event to be for everyone, not just the petrol head of the family and have added that family friendly favourite…a fair to the grounds for all to enjoy. The beauty of Formula Vintage is it has something for everyone , whether you like fast cars, vintage or just really cool automotive machines this is the place to be for the next two days.

Unlike with some car clubs the VSCC is not  an exclusive ‘old boys club’ , in fact just the opposite , they know they need the next generation of vintage car fanatics and racers to keep them going or it will just die out and what a loss that would be. There will be young drivers there such as Tom Walker as well as new drivers out on their first race.

We will have front row seats to see the Ecurie Bertelli refurbished Aston Martin race with a new driver on this hallowed track and will be bringing you their tips on how to get into racing yourself.

So follow us over the weekend as we bring you the straights and turns of this enthralling vintage racing weekend.
