The pioneers at Google have come up with what is probably the best invention since the internet! The self driving bicycle launches in Amsterdam very soon. Google Netherlands had their Dutch team work on a bicycle that would implement state of the art technology that would make cycling safer and easier. Cycling is a big thing in Amsterdam and the team at Google deemed it the perfect place to launch such a project.
The self driving bicycles navigate your route safely and knows when oncoming traffic is approaching. Google suggest that you can send the bike to collect your child or even work from your laptop during your commute saving you time!
Here at Mens Stuff Approved we feel that we would not yet trust the technology enough to collect a small child or work from a laptop during a journey. Tesla introduced a similar concept with their self driving car and there have been crashes so the technology is not flawless…yet.
However there is no denying that this is a great idea and will take some of the stress out of the daily commute on those days that you just feel a bit too tired to put in the pedal work.
We love this, but to play devils advocate we can’t help wondering if an increase in self drive bikes would effect the obesity crisis. Holland is known for it’s delectable high fat pastries and pastry dishes and we suggest that the reason that many of the Dutch are so slender is because they do cycle everywhere. We stress that exercise is still extremely important for health and that this shouldn’t totally replace the daily cycle, but instead should be used for those times when you are in a real hurry!
