Marc Newson, the visionary designer behind the Apple Watch, has partnered with Swarovski to introduce the world’s first smart binoculars. These groundbreaking devices, unveiled at CES 2024, utilize artificial intelligence to identify over 9,000 species of birds and animals with just the touch of a button.
Birdwatching has always been a rewarding activity that stimulates the brain, sharpens the senses, and encourages keen observation. The Swarovski AI binoculars are set to transform this beloved hobby, making it even more engaging and informative. By leveraging digital intelligence, enthusiasts can now effortlessly identify and learn about various species, enhancing their overall experience.
The AX VISIO binoculars are a marvel of innovation, equipped with long-range analog optics and a real-time identification system. This system instantly provides detailed information about the birds and wildlife spotted. Additionally, these smart binoculars can capture photos and videos, which can be saved or shared via the Swarovski Optik Outdoor App. This app features a ‘Shared Discoveries’ function, enabling users to guide others to observed objects using arrow markers in the display.
Marking Swarovski Optik’s 75th anniversary, the AX VISIO binoculars are a significant advancement in birdwatching and hunting. Andreas Gerk, Swarovski Optik’s Chief Technology and Operations Officer, highlights the added value these binoculars bring by combining a real viewing experience with digital enhancements.
Designer Marc Newson expressed his excitement about the project, noting the unique challenge of creating a new product category. “Binoculars have traditionally been analog, compelling but bi-dimensional. The AX VISIO introduces a new typology, combining optics and technology, much like a modern camera,” Newson explained. He aimed to design a product that is both high-performance and user-friendly, avoiding unnecessary complexity to create something intuitive and inviting.
The AX VISIO features a distinctive three-scope construction, a visual departure from traditional binoculars. This design includes a solid hinge and bridge detail, connecting the three lenses. The development of this structure required significant time and manufacturing expertise to perfect.
With the introduction of the AX VISIO, Swarovski and Marc Newson are poised to change the way we experience and appreciate the natural world, making birdwatching more accessible and enjoyable for all.
