Hi Becca, We are very excited to be sponsoring you in the Miss Central London GB Finals. Can you tell us how you got involved with this? We are dying to find out all the exciting details!
Last week at an event with my luxury model and host agency Corporate Angels I met the lovely Danny Lambo who insisted I would be great for the Miss GB Official competition and invited me to a press launch the following evening. The next day I was submitted as a late entry and I’m now on the way to compete for the Miss Central London title on the 11th May at DSTRKT London with my sponsor Mens Stuff Approved. It is exciting for me to be involved as I am already a model and not the regular kind of candidate for a beauty pageant. I’ll certainly be promoting natural beauty and the importance of working on your inside over your outside and hope to put my stamp on the pageant.
And you possess both Becca. It’s inspiring to see you promoting a strong self image to women that doesn’t just rely on looks. So tell us what it’s like to work with Danny. We bet you have some wild stories!
Danny is great to work with, we socialise in lots of the same circles so we have mutual friends and obviously that’s how it transpired that we first met. With the Lamborghinis, magazine shoots and harem of women surrounding him all the time, I can see why he is known as a playboy. I personally love the first story he told me about getting signed to Sony and moving to Japan as a child for his music career. He shows off his wealth as a playboy, but I think this also shows he’s always been a dedicated, driven, hard worker and from a young age knew he was going to make something of himself. His relationship with Balbir his assistant is also fabulous, I can’t imagine Danny without his right hand man. I’m yet to witness anything too outrageous, but here’s hoping it’ll all unfold at the Miss Central London finals!
Sounds exciting we’ll be there with cameras! Seriously he sounds like a great guy. So tell us a little more about your presenting career. Did you go straight from studying your degree in journalism to presenting? How did it transpire and what was your very first presenting job?
I have always known that I wanted to work in broadcast journalism and this is how I got into modelling to begin with – following in the footsteps of models turned presenters such as Holly Willoughby, Alexa Chung and Lisa Snowden. In my Year 6 leaving assembly, when I was 10, I stood up and told the school I wanted to work as a journalist.
I have appeared front of screen in all kinds of things over the years both as a reporter and a presenter. The first thing I ever presented on TV was a news bulletin for our student television station Trent TV which I went on to run in my final year at university. I went on to report at festivals internationally, present live studio shows, commentate at live sporting events, report at the general elections for ITV as well as working behind the scenes in production for Channel 5, Bang Showbiz, Ideal Home and Notts TV. I’ve also recently worked in feature length films as a featured extra and intend to keep grasping every opportunity with both hands.
It sounds as if you have many talents. It must be great fun to report all over the world on different topics. Have you ever had anything go wrong on set or anything funny happen?
Things often go wrong both in TV and modelling as it’s often live, ad-libbed and set to change on the day. I did have one memorable commercial shoot for a well known cider company where a group of models and I were supposed to get into a pool filled with cider. The problem was, this pool was at the top of a hill in the Derbyshire Dales, it was around 5 degrees, and the wind literally blew me down the hill, repeatedly. Not bikini weather! I had another where I was reporting at a festival and I had to jump off at least a 30 foot scaffolding rig sponsored by OnePiece into an inflatable for a piece to camera. Which was all well and good but to get different shots I had to perform this around 10 times. I went to Ibiza the next week with a friend and we decided to go cliff jumping, however my muscle memory kicked in and I put my legs out in front of me in a pike like I had on the scaffolding. I landed flat on the water, it literally hurt my legs so much I had to swim with only my arms back to the rock face.
You should have demanded a stunt double! Move over Jason Statham he hasn’t got a patch on you! Glad you were ok. We would love to hear more about your modelling too.. Shoots you have done, how you got into it and the highs and lows of being a model?
Modelling is great and I have always been surprised by the variety of work you do. I actually got scouted three times – once in Manchester, once in Birmingham and once in London – before I joined my first agency Model Students when I was in my first year at university. They promote the mantra ‘more than just pretty faces’ and that attracted me to the agency. I wanted to join with the intention of getting into television presenting and had never considered that I would actually develop a career in modelling. I had previously thought it would be catty and superficial, but I have really learnt to withhold judgement in all areas of life since modelling as this belief couldn’t be further from the truth. Almost as soon as I started I fell in love with the industry, the driven, independent women and men in it, and being in front of the camera, as always, was amazing for me. I was so lucky to work with Model Students as they are truly a family agency who care for each and every model they take onto their books, it gave me a great start into the world of modelling and I progressed to larger agencies from there. I have now done many high profile events including all major fashion weeks, editorial work, I’ve been published in several magazines and I’m signed to agencies in both the UK and France. Just recently I did a shoot with £30,000 worth of jewellery, couture gowns, designer shoes and an enormous crew in the Royal Suite at the Savoy, and soon I’ll be flying out to Paris and then Cannes for the Film Festival. So if anyone ever tells you modelling isn’t glamorous then think again! There’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes and gruelling working hours but I absolutely love my job and there is nothing like the buzz of high fashion.
We think you are a great ambassador for women as you have both brains and beauty. What advice would you give to aspiring models or women wanting to work in television?
I would say I have a long way to go before I would feel comfortable giving others life advice. But what I have learnt and always believed in is education is everything. Being a pretty face is not enough, to be a well rounded, happy and successful human being, you must work on your inside – your mind, your personality, your beliefs, your outlook on life, and approach every opportunity and every struggle with a positive approach. There have been times when I have felt that between my family/ love/ work life and friendships everything has gone wrong but I have learnt to depend on myself and know that every person is going through their own internal struggles. Mindfulness, motivation and beginning have been key to me succeeding as far as I have so far.
We totally agree, happiness is a state of mind. Now the question we are burning to ask is what will you do if you win Miss Great Britain?
It is my great ambition to make a difference on a national stage and a don’t mean by the classic ‘I want world peace’. I want to show women that we can compete and often surpass our male peers and I hope by the end of my life I can say I have grasped every opportunity I have been offered with two hands. The most important thing to me coming directly out of this competition is not to conform to what a pageant girl is often perceived to be. I have no cosmetic surgery, I don’t dye my hair or fake tan my skin and while I support and defend men and women making any of these choices – I want to show you can be comfortable in your own skin, not modify yourself to be unrecognisable, and still win a beauty competition.
Girl Power! We like your style Becca. In a world where there are endless clones of the Kardashians, it is refreshing to see a young lady let their natural looks and personality shine through. So, tell us what’s it like working with the other Miss Central London GB girls? Is it like a constant party or are you busy rehearsing?
The girls are all hard working and have their own busy jobs and lives, so it’s actually really interesting to meet girls from all different walks of life that I may never have met if it wasn’t for this competition. We’re all available at different times and attending different events, so the time we actually spend together is sadly limited. Personally, I work either as a model or in TV almost every day and I can’t imagine not waking up to an inbox full of emails. Nowadays, I don’t get to party like I did when I was at University, which is probably a good thing as I never do things by halves! That said, I am somewhat of a social butterfly and I’m forever networking and meeting new people, if I win the Miss London title there will be extensive celebrations!
Let’s pop the champagne! It sounds as if you career is extremely diverse and you are definitely going places. Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
I hope to see myself working across the world as a presenter, journalist and model. I would love to be an ambassador for charities and encourage others to spare a little of their time to broaden their minds, and protect our small but wonderful world and everything in it.
If you could go anywhere in the world with Men’s Stuff and in any car, what car would you pick and where would you want to go?
My favourite car is the Ferrari Enzo (sorry Danny!), and as a tall leggy blonde it has to be in my statement red. I would road trip as far as it could take me! I see myself nipping about the streets of St Tropez or Monaco to start with, but I’ll pass my driving test first and take it from there!
Thanks for taking part in the interview Becca! Our fingers are crossed for you and we have the champagne ready!
