PlayStation 4K, codenamed Neo, is finally due to be unveiled in New York on September 7th. The special event kicks off at 8pm UK time (3pm local).

The console will support 4K gaming, as well as 4K media playback and streaming. Despite the advanced technology, the PS4 and Neo are due to live happily together; games will run on both consoles, there will be no online feature barriers, and save data/downloadable content will be interchangeable between both consoles. The DualShock 4 will continue to be the primary controller.

So far we know the 3 core upgrades from the PS4: The CPU will see a 31% improvement, from 1.6GHz to 2.1GHz, keeping the same x86-64 AMD Jaguar 8 cores. The GPU will see a 14% improvement, going from 18 Compute units clocking in at 800MHz to 36 Compute units clocking in at 911MHZ. Finally, the memory will see a 24% improvement in bandwidth and 512MB increase in usable memory whilst keeping the same 8GB GDDR5, going from 176GB/s to 218GB/s.

Rumours are that PlayStation 4 titles due from October onwards should support the Neo alongside the PS4, with a launch date of November on the cards. At this moment, these are only rumours, but it will be interesting to see if Sony do showcase any games alongside the console, or if they have changed the specs since learning of the superior tech in Project Scorpio. Either way, we finally don’t have too long to wait for the answers.
