Man’s reaction to how the world has changed.
Otis Johnson was a young man when he was sent to prison. Ok lets be frank here, he attempted to kill a policeman which is a pretty dumb move and consequently landed him in jail for 44 years!
As a 69 year old man now, it’s impossible to recognise the reckless youth that sacrificed almost a lifetime in a moment of insanity. Otis now seems to be at peace with himself and is grateful to experience the world once more. Watching him enjoy simple pleasures in life is quite heartwarming, if you can overlook his previous maximum screw up!
The world changes significantly in 44 years and our modern age was alien to Otis at first. He is fascinated by things such as simple as people talking on smart phones, walking round wearing head phones and hands free kits. He likened them to CIA agents and spies! There’s almost a child like innocence about him as he looks around in wonderment at how the world has. Critics have lashed out at Johnson, but this is a man that has done his time transformed, paid has dues and has seemingly reformed. Otis speaks like a man who has had a lot of time to think about his actions and it is apparent that he has missed out on a great deal of stuff that others take for granted.
Otis strikes us as a man who could have been rehabilitated a lot sooner and could have been a useful member of society. But what’s happened has happened and we can’t change history. Otis accepts all of that and is only thankful and full of gratitude for his freedom and all the amazing sights that he is now able to enjoy.
