The Rebel Disses New Ghostbusters

See Gavin Mcinnes’ acerbic monologue on why he thinks the new Ghostbusters with an all female cast is a recipe for failure.

He’s got a few good points to be fair although he doesn’t word his tirade quite as eloquently as he could have done. Take the picture below for example:

Mcinne argues that these women are trying too hard to be like men, and furthermore that men don’t stand like this. We think he has a point here. The stances are all wrong and don’t look right. If this film truly carries a pro feminism message than why do these women need to try an emulate the posture of men to be successful? They should be celebrating their feminine wiles. There are plenty more power poses that could have been more appropriate without them having to look quite so butch. So the message of the film it seems is that women need to be like men to be successful. Surely that’s an anti-feminism message?

Now this is where he falls down in our opinion. Mcinne claims that women should not be cast as Ghostbusters as “women are sacred of ghosts and spiders and would scream”. We believe that The Rebel has been somewhat shortsighted here. After all, a larger percentage of paranormal investigators are women! Furthermore there are plenty of female entomologists such as Diana Terranova who are quite used to handling bugs and little critters without losing the plot and screaming their lungs out! We’ll forgive Mcinne this error though, perhaps he jumped into his time machine and hopped out at the wrong year!

Now another point is the casting. We just don’t think that it is strong enough and not at all because it’s a female cast, but because it’s not the right cast and casting is everything. Combined, these women do not interest us enough to give them much screen time. They spend too much time trying to be funny like men rather than being funny like women.

Mcinne was right on one thing – men are men and women are women. Whilst we don’t agree that the women should run round screaming or filming their nails, a little feminity would have made this more believable and made the characters more authentic.

Anyway – see the trailer and decide for yourself!
