Recently, the AMG division has developed two new sports car models in two distinct styles, introducing the New SL roadster alongside the New GT Coupe. In this dual release, the SL transforms from a hardtop convertible to a lightweight fabric roof, accompanied by a new downsized engine option in the AMG SL43. Meanwhile, the GT Coupe, a legendary presence both on the streets and the racetracks, receives upgrades tailored to captivate the hearts of middle-aged enthusiasts even more. The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is a high-performance machine reimagined as a practical 2+2 sports car, featuring the versatile 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. Initially, two versions will be available: the AMG GT 63 Coupe and the AMG GT 55 Coupe, both equipped with V8 engines. Additionally, there’s speculation about the inclusion of the SL 43’s new inline-four engine with 375 horsepower in future releases.
The flagship AMG GT 63 Coupe boasts an impressive 577 horsepower and 800 Newton-meters of torque from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. Tuning enhancements reflect the output found in the SL 63, clocking a 0-100 kilometers per hour acceleration time of 3.1 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the SL63. Meanwhile, the AMG GT 55 Coupe delivers 469 horsepower and 700 Newton-meters of torque, accelerating from 0-100 kilometers per hour in 3.8 seconds.
The AMG GT 63 Coupe achieves a top speed of 315 kilometers per hour (196 miles per hour), while the entry-level AMG GT 55 Coupe hits a maximum speed of 295 kilometers per hour (183 miles per hour). Both the “63” and “55” models feature the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, a 9-speed automatic transmission with wet clutch start, and an active exhaust system. The V8 engine employs active cylinder deactivation, allowing power distribution between front and rear axles or sending all power to the rear wheels if necessary. Controlled by electronic systems, the rear limited-slip differential is accompanied by rear-wheel steering, carbon-ceramic composite disc brakes, and front brake discs measuring 390mm. In 2024, AMG plans to introduce larger ceramic brakes with 420mm discs at the front. Both models incorporate a sports suspension system with semi-active hydraulically adjustable dampers, featuring a front lift system raising the nose by 1.18 inches (30 mm).
The new Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is set to debut in the first half of 2024. From the sneak peek images, it’s evident that AMG is committed to expanding the GT Coupe product lineup, including at least one plug-in hybrid model with a rear-mounted port for charging.
