DeLorean Alpha5 Unveiled: Electric Coupe with 300-Mile Range
DeLorean makes a grand return with the Alpha5, a sleek electric coupe designed to embody the future while paying homage to its iconic DMC-12 roots. Crafted by Italdesign, the Alpha5 boasts the largest gullwing doors ever seen, reminiscent of its predecessor’s distinctive feature. However, beyond these nods to the past, the design is thoroughly modern, featuring massive wheels, slim front and rear lights, and a charging port conveniently located on the driver’s side front fender.
Inside, the Alpha5 offers a blend of luxury and technology, with a spacious interior accommodating two individual rear seats and a “floating” center console housing all controls within a touchscreen interface. The driver benefits from a wide fully digital instrument cluster and a flat-bottomed steering wheel for a futuristic driving experience.
While DeLorean remains tight-lipped about specifics, the Alpha5 is said to achieve 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph, thanks to a battery pack exceeding 100 kWh, providing a range of over 300 miles according to EPA estimates. This, however, is just the beginning, as DeLorean hints at hotter variants in the pipeline.
Beyond performance, the Alpha5 boasts a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.23, ensuring efficient aerodynamics. Gone is the underpowered V6 engine, replaced by an undisclosed electric setup delivering swift acceleration up to 88 mph in 4.35 seconds.
Size-wise, the Alpha5 dwarfs its predecessor, measuring 4,995 millimeters long, 2,044 millimeters wide, and 1,370 millimeters tall when the gullwing doors are closed. Production will be outsourced to Italy, with the powertrain supplied by a UK-based manufacturer.
Limited to just 88 units, the Alpha5 will pave the way for a V8-powered sports coupe, followed by an electric sedan and hydrogen-powered SUV in DeLorean’s extended lineup. Scheduled for public debut at Pebble Beach in August, production of the Alpha5 is set to commence in 2024, marking a new chapter in DeLorean’s storied history.
